I am glad to announce the release of the first version of The ultimate SharePoint 2013 Certification Guide on my Blog!  The Guide has been out since June 4th, however it was exclusive to  SharePoint Community Members.  This guide is aimed at anyone who is considering studying for SharePoint Certifications either to improve their knowledge or to validate existing knowledge about SharePoint.

This guide covers both certification options for all roles on both the Business and Technical side. To achieve technical certifications Microsoft offers several exams and certification options. For the “Business side” (Business Analysts, PMs, architects, end-users, power-users) Microsoft currently only offer the MOS (Microsoft Office Specialist) certification path. However, we have also included a section in the guide that covers the Salem certifications.

In this Guide, you will find graphical summaries of the exams you need to take in order to achieve your desired Certification as well as the Information, Costs, and Benefits of each one!

Last week I did a post about the new website called Discover SharePoint, and talked about their new Adoption Kit. In it, you have a lot of marketing videos, however, the downside is that they aren’t all on the website yet.  This post will list all the SharePoint Marketing Videos found in the Adoption Kit, so you can watch them and show them to your clients directly online.

Microsoft is not known for the amount of SharePoint advertising they do… because they didn’t really do any in the past. However, in the past few weeks Microsoft doubled their efforts and released some very great pieces of advertising. First, it was this great Youtube video called “What is SharePoint”

And now, they released a great new site called Discover SharePoint that you can find here: http://www.discoversharepoint.com/ . (How come I didn’t think of this domain name before)? Let’s analyze it, see what’s interesting in it:

The 6 squares on the right

SharePoint advertising

This is really cool, because it shows a lot of the new features of SharePoint 2013… It’s an Updated Wheel!

Store, sync and share your content > SkyDrive Pro!

Stay on track and deliver on time > Project Sites

Find what you need > Search 2013 (including FAST now )

Keep everyone on the same page > Co-Authoring, Versioning, Team Sites, Site Mailboxes.

Find the right people > MySites / Yammer (also seen in video)

Make informed Decisions > Business intelligence.

However, in SharePoint 2007 and 2010, the 6 pillars of SharePoint where in a wheel… does the wheel stay the same? Does the wheel change? I am not sure, however here is my version of the SharePoint 2013 Wheel. I would love to have some feedback from you on how we can make it better!

SharePoint 2013 Wheel

My Version of the SharePoint 2013 Wheel

Discover SharePoint Site Structure > Focused on the Business Units

At the core, the site is designed around the Business Units in every company.

This is good because for once, it’s not only IT stuff. People from Sales, RH, Finance and Legal finally find their place and find content that is directly related to them. This will help boost SharePoint adoption and demand directly from the Business Units, and not from the IT Department. This will create a lot more successful deployments. For example, check out the slide aimed at “Legal”. It talks directly about what hurts them, and proving that SharePoint is the solution to all their problems.

Downloadable Material and SIMPLE videos.

On the site, you also find simple videos that show off the really cool collaboration features included in SharePoint Server 2013. Such as Co-authoring and SkyDrive Pro.

You can also download the Use Case Catalog and the Adoption Kit. The Use case Catalog is basically the site, in a PDF document. However, the adoption kit is really interesting (and it includes the Use Case Catalog).

In the Adoption Kit You have the following:

The Adoption Guide is a really interesting document that explains how to increase adoption of SharePoint in a Business. Here is the Summary:

Adoption of new technologies at work, like SharePoint, won’t happen all at once. In this paper, learn how to craft an effective plan, aligned with business goals, that will demonstrate how SharePoint will benefit business people personally, how it will make their job easier, and how it will address the pain points they experience at work. By taking a planned, phased approach, you can ensure successful adoption by using the best practices obtained by the SharePoint User Adoption Research from Microsoft, and from customers and partners who are successful at driving SharePoint adoption.

The Use Case How to Videos are videos that show off the “6 Squares of the wheel “that you saw earlier in my post. They are pretty interesting, and they go well with the Use Case How to Guides, which are kind of the PDF version.

The Use Case Catalog is the same DiscoverSharePoint.PDF file you can simply download by clicking the “Get the Use Case Catalog” link instead of the Adoption Kit.

And Finally, the Discover_SharePoint_Content.xlsx is a resume of what’s in the other folders J.

Reboot Required?

One thing that I would like to draw your attention to is that even if for the SharePoint Server 2013 Cumulative Update, Microsoft says that no reboot is required,  however when I installed it in my lab environment, it did ask me for a reboot.

SharePoint Server 2013 June 2013 Cumulative Update is out, might require reboot

After blogging about the MCSD 7 times in the past 7 months, I am happy to announce you that the MCSD: SharePoint Applications Certification path is finally publicly available!

MCSD: SharePoint Applications Certification path

So, let’s see what’s interesting:

1. I was right, the path is exams 480/486/488/489

In the past 7 blogs, I was almost certain that the unannounced exam was the 70-486, however with no official word from the part of Microsoft, I could not confirm anything.  I am happy to have been right!  Confirming the 70-486 today makes Perfect Sense.

Exam 70-486 is called:  Developing ASP.NET MVC 4 Web Applications

And this, just got posted on the Microsoft Office Blog:   Introducing MVC support for apps for SharePoint  > http://blogs.msdn.com/b/officeapps/archive/2013/07/09/introducing-mvc-support-for-apps-for-sharepoint.aspx

2. Re-certification required every 2 years.

Like with the other MCSD Exams, to keep your certification you will need to re-certify every 2 years.  This is different from the MCSE Certification where you need to recertifiy every 3 years.

3. There is no upgrade path

I think this was a bit of a last-minute decision by Microsoft.  Here is why:

1. They Changed the FAQ on the home page. It used to be:

Q.I have an MCPD on Visual Studio 2010. How can I upgrade to an MCSD certification?

A.If you have achieved an MCPD: Windows Developer 4 certification, MCPD: Web Developer 4 certification, or MCPD: SharePoint Developer 2010 certification, you will be able to earn an MCSD certification on the corresponding solution by passing two exams.

Now, they took it off…

2. The Certification Planner included Exam 70-493

Watermarked1

However, I can’t say it was truly last minute, because in February, J. Seymour from Microsoft said that the 70-493 exam didn’t exist.

Seymour2

3. Exam 480/486 won’t be required for the MCSM

In the past “version” of the MCSM path, you needed the “MCSD: SharePoint Applications” Certification for the MCSM starting January 2014.  However, in the current version, you only need the 488/489 exams, and not the full MCSD.

That’s all, and I guess this post will end the rumours about the MCSD SharePoint 2013 Certification path.  For your information and for fun, here are the past articles I did on the Cert Path:
