On June 25 2012, Microsoft acquired Yammer, a leading provider of enterprise social networks, for $1.2 billion in cash.

In SharePoint 2010, MySites became a little more popular, however not a lot of people wanted them. Most of the Enterprise Customers saw it as a Facebook and didn’t want it in their company because they didn’t see it as productive.

However, in SharePoint 2013 Yammer, together with SkyDrive Pro made the MySites a real tool that will increase productivity and collaboration in the Enterprise.  If you didn’t see the SharePoint Conference Keynote yet, you really have to watch it!.

At the conference, Yammer announced new pricing for their plans.  Here is the announcement:

We’re happy to announce multiple changes to Yammer’s pricing structure that will bring more value at an even more affordable rate for your business. Our recent acquisition by Microsoft means that we’re capable of some great new things, and this is only the beginning.
We are consolidating Yammer paid services into a single offering, Yammer Enterprise Network, and reducing the price of the offering from $15 to just $3 per user per month. This will be available as of today to new Yammer customers. Yammer Basic will, of course, continue to be offered for free.
In addition, starting March 1, 2013, customers with a Microsoft Enterprise Agreement can purchase Yammer Enterprise via Microsoft volume licensing.
Lastly, we will be shipping Yammer with SharePoint Online as well as with Office 365, for no extra charge. This means customers get the best cloud productivity service and the best of enterprise social service in one.
Here’s the pricing info, in a nutshell:

Yammer Basic standalone: $0
Yammer Enterprise standalone $3 per user per month
SharePoint Online (Plan 1) + Yammer Enterprise $4 per user per month
SharePoint Online (Plan 2) + Yammer Enterprise $8 per user per month
Office 365 E Plans 1-4 + Yammer Enterprise $8 – $24 per user per month

Since most of you liked the post I did about free material for SharePoint 2013, I decided to do one on another Microsoft product, that is still pretty fresh: Windows Server 2012.   Even if Server 2012 isn’t SharePoint 2013 it’s a very important part because your SharePoint 2013 Infrastructure will probably run on Server 2012.  Furhtemore, this will be very useful for SharePoint Professionals because you need to pass your MCSA Server 2012 in order to get your MCSE SharePoint 2013!.

Microsoft is releasing a lot of free material for Windows Server 2012 on Microsoft Download Center. The Microsoft Download Center is actually a Gold Mine of knowledge, however the problem is, no-one knows it’s there. I decided to make a tour of all the learning and useful material I could find for the month of October.  Also, not a lot of people know about Microsoft Virtual Academy (MVA).  MVA is the best place for free training from Microsoft.  It doesn’t have anything on SharePoint at the moment, however it has A LOT of stuff about Virtualization and Windows Server 2012.

Here is a short description of Microsoft Virtual Academy :

Microsoft Virtual Academy – MVA is a fully cloud-based learning experience focusing on Microsoft Cloud Technologies. You can access a variety of training content online and become one of the renowned experts in the IT Pro community around the world. MVA provides its users with a virtual university experience: the student can select a track and study the material and then do the self-assessment. By doing so, he will collect points that will promote him to a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum Level. Students on MVA can get access to all the information, statistics and advancements of their training career, allowing them to maintain a long-term relationship with Microsoft. Learning through MVA is free of charge, and you can study the contents at any time and at your own pace.
The MVA platform is hosted on the latest Microsoft Azure technology, which guarantees that your learning experience will flow uninterruptedly for the best online learning experience ever!

Here is all the learning material you need to keep you occupied for the whole month :). If you finish all this, you will be more than capable of getting your MCSA Server 2012.

Keith Mayer’s  Windows Server 2012 ‘Early Experts’ Challenge

This is a very interesting series of  “quests” done by  Keith Mayer, which is a Microsoft MVP.  Every 1-2 weeks, a new quest comes out and you have to finish all the learning and labs to accomplish it. When you do, you receive a nice certificate that you can print.  (You can see mine at the end of the post). Furthermore, every quest is focused on a specific part of the Server 2012 Certifications.  I think it’s a very nice way to learn and the materials Keith is giving are really to the point.   Here is the official description from his blog :

The Windows Server 2012 “Early Experts” Challenge provides a FREE online study group with certification exam preparation materials for quickly learning about the latest version of Windows Server!  The Challenge involves a series of Knowledge Quests – starting with the Apprentice Quest below – and each Quest ends with a special completion certificate for you to promote your new knowledge!  To make it easy to participate, each Quest is developed in a modular format that you can complete based on your own schedule and availability.Currently, our study group is targeting Exam 70-410: Installing and Configuring Windows Server 2012 from Sept through Nov 2012. After that, we’ll be continuing on to study for the other exams in the MCSA: Windows Server 2012 certification track. Learn more about this program by watching the video below.

Here are my current certificates:

I marked this as Part 1 because I will try and search on-line every month and bring you the best material on the internet. This is all the free Windows Server 2012 Material for the month of October.

Microsoft Learning announced it is offering a voucher for exam 70-480 for free through 3/31/2013 while supplies last.

Furthermore, they also offer a jump-start training for the 70-480 exam absolutely free on Microsoft Virtual Academy.

Here is the official text From Microsoft Virtual Academy:

Register now to take your HTML5 with JavaScript and CSS3 exam (70-480 for free using the voucher code HTMLJMP or watch this on-line course to hone your HTML 5, JavaScript & CSS3 skills. (The voucher code is available through 3/31/2013 while supplies last.)

Edit(2/01/2013): The voucher code HTMLJMP is not working anymore because all the available exams have been taken.  You get the following error:

ERROR
“The maximum count for the promotion has been exceeded. Please try another promotion.”

However, there is another promotion code that works (I don’t know for how long). The code is: HTMLMPN and it works as of today.  Special thanks to ‘Lonleypearl’ for the code!

Also, don’t forget the 70-480 exam is Required for the MCSD SharePoint Certification. Click for more info.

Edit(16/01/2013): The voucher code HTMLMPN is not working anymore because all the available exams have been taken.  You get the following error:

ERROR
“The maximum count for the promotion has been exceeded. Please try another promotion.”

However, the original code: HTMLJMP is working again as of today!

Now you might ask, how is this related to SharePoint? Well, the SharePoint 2013 UI is based on HTML 5, and developers can now create apps based on JavaScript & HTML 5.  For more info on developping apps using HTML5 & Javascript, visit :  Build apps for SharePoint

NOTE: Although in the official text from Microsoft , they describe it as a voucher code ,  when you enter it as a voucher in Prometric you get the following message.

In the “Discount Type” drop down, you must select Promotional code , and it will work perfectly. And, as Microsoft promised, the “voucher” gives the exam for free :

Here is what it looks like after successfully applying the code:

Edit(13/02/2013): Microsoft Learning that all vouchers have been taken. I think it’s dead for real now!
